Auburn baseball is set to open up its 2024 campaign this weekend, taking on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels for the first time ever. Now, just the Tigers have officially announced who the starters will be for the series.
Auburn will throw out juniors [autotag]Chase Allsup[/autotag], [autotag]Joseph Gonzalez[/autotag] and [autotag]Carson Myers[/autotag]. All three pitchers were starters in 2023, making it an all veteran rotation to start the season.
Allsup returns to the staff this year after making 20 appearances in 2023, with eight of those being starts. The right-hander posted a 1-2 record and a 5.47 ERA in the 49.1 innings that he pitched. He will look to have a better strikeout-to-walk ratio this season after striking out 49 hitters, but giving 33 free passes. As a full-time starter this year, he should have a better sample size to improve his game as the season progresses.
Gonzalez will get back on the bump Saturday after missing nearly all of last season with a lingering shoulder soreness. In his one outing, he threw for just five innings and faced just one batter over the minimum. He gave up only two hits and struck out one batter. Coming off of his medical redshirt, he looks to be a dominant force in the Tigers’ rotation.
Myers will close out the series on Sunday in his first start in an Auburn uniform. The UAB transfer posted a 3-5 record and a 3.52 ERA in 14 appearances last season, with 13 of those being starts. He pitched 71.2 innings last year, striking out 70 batters and walking 34. Myers is also looking to bring down his number in the hit-per-nine category, posting a 7.5 last year. He hopes of being a dominant force in the SEC this year as a new face to the league.
The Tigers’ first game with the Colonels is set for 6 p.m. CST on Friday, Feb. 16. Games two and three will be on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and both will start at 1 p.m. CST.
