‘Tis the (off)season of change for the Seattle Seahawks, as they enter into a bold new era under head coach Mike Macdonald. Plenty of questions still exist for Seattle and will persist throughout the spring and summer. But one thing has been made certain: quarterback Geno Smith will be on the roster.
At least for now.
The Seahawks were facing an impending decision related to their now two-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Smith’s contract features a healthy chunk of change that becomes fully-guaranteed on Friday ($12.7 million). We now know, thanks to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Smith will receive said-money as he will remain in Seattle.

Schefter elaborated how the Seahawks felt it was in their best financial interest to keep Smith at this price when compared to how inflated quarterback salaries have become.
Whether he stays on the team throughout the 2024 season or finds a new home via trade, he stays at a reasonable (by NFL standards) price point. Speaking of trades, if Seattle wanted to go down this route with Smith, they have until March 17, when he’s due a $9.6 million roster bonus.

This is a solid move from all angles. Smith gets his well-earned money, the Seahawks have a viable and affordable quarterback, and oh yeah… they actually get to still have a quarterback on the roster right now.
With backup Drew Lock set to be a free agent and no other player behind him, Smith is technically the only quarterback Seattle has at the moment. Obviously, this won’t be the case for long. The Seahawks are sure to address the quarterback position via the draft this spring. But for now, Smith is still in the equation.
