Gators hosting elite transfer portal RB on official visit

Florida is hosting one of the top running backs in the transfer portal on an official visit this weekend.

One of the top running backs in the spring transfer portal is former Houston rusher [autotag]Alton McCaskill[/autotag]. The Florida Gators have shown interest in adding McCaskill recently and are hosting him on an official visit over the May 5 weekend, according to 247Sports.

McCaskill was the 2021 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, but he missed all of 2022 with a torn ACL. With three years of college eligibility left, Florida is one of many Power Five teams looking at McCaskill.

The Gators boast one of the top running back rooms in the SEC, so McCaskill would be joining a crowded situation. Junior Montrell Johnson Jr. could be in his last year with the program before turning pro, but sophomore Trevor Etienne and true freshman Treyaun Webb present a clear line of succession for the lead spot in the backfield.

Florida also brought in Tulane transfer Cam Carroll during the winter portal period, but he’ll be out of eligibility after this year. Adding a near 1,000-yard rusher that scored 16 touchdowns as a freshman in the AAC can’t hurt the Gators, but McCaskill might look for a new home with more opportunity.

Getting McCaskill in town for a multi-day official visit is a positive sign, and plenty of players have signed with Napier’s Gators immediately after visiting the Swamp. California and Colorado are the other two programs that have shown a good amount of interest in him, according to 247Sports.
