My best excuse is that the Aggies were due for a stinker. Lucky for them, all the work they put in on the first two days awarded them the opportunity to avenge their loss. The Cardinals came in warm off their elimination game win over Cal State Fullerton and hit the ball all over the field in a 13-5 win.
The game started with Stanford scoring two runs before the clean batter even stepped out of the batter’s box. However, Jace LaViolette would give the Aggies the lead on a three-run homer over the center field wall. Then two batters later, Ryan Targac hit a solo shot extending the lead to 4-2.
Stanford matched A&M with their own four runs on three hits retaking the lead 4-6. This game was shaping up to be a highlight-reel game but actually turned into a stalemate, with both teams going scoreless for the next three innings. The Aggies pulled within one run in the bottom of the sixth with a Brett Minnich home run.
The wheels fell off in the seventh inning for the Maroon & White when the pitchers could not locate the strike zone, and a handful of wild pitches got away from them. That perfect storm led to Stanford scoring seven runs to pull away with a 5-13 lead. With neither team crossing the plate the rest of the night, the Cardinals held their lead to force a win-or-go-home situation on Monday.
