Frank Sinatra appears in this Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin trailer

Yes, really.

Never has a big-budget action RPG been so outwardly bizarre like Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, and the new trailer reinforces those weird vibes.

On Monday, Square Enix the final trailer for Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, and it’s pretty strange — par for the course with this game. Gleaning anything comprehensible from this is beyond my capabilities at any rate.

Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin  is set in the same universe as the original Final Fantasy, so the “Warriors of Light” mentioned in the trailer goes beyond a simple callback. There are, however, visual references towards iconic creatures and locales from  across the series

Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” plays throughout the trailer’s latter half too. Square Enix should’ve licensed Limp Bizkit’s “My Way” instead because the protagonist Jack is brimming with Fred Durst energy.

The combat looks solid, that’s for sure. Who knows if the story will live up to Final Fantasy’s often high standards, but if it yields a good belly laugh or two, that’ll be plenty good enough for most. Not many  big RPGs in 2022  scratch that itch, so perhaps Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin  has already found its niche.

Jin Fujiwara, a producer on Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, told Polygon  that knowledge of the first Final Fantasy  isn’t a requirement to enjoy this game.

“The game is created so that you don’t have to necessarily be familiar with the original Final Fantasy,” Fujiwara said. “If you do have an understanding of the original title, it might help kind of expand the lore that you’re familiar with. We have our heroes, who believe that they are the Warriors of Light, but they actually turn out to be like the enemy, Garland. When you’re fighting the four different [fiends], how they came about is going to be depicted in Stranger of Paradise, so I think it’s not necessary but it does allow for a deeper experience into the game.”

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin  comes out March 18, 2022, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
