Texas is surging in a recruitment for another defensive back.
Four-star safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell listed the Longhorns as one of his top five schools on Tuesday. On the surface, the team is just one of five contenders for the big time prospect. However, according to On3 Sports, Texas is the team to watch out for.
The On3 Prediction Machine lists Texas as the heavy favorite to win out for the IMG Academy product. Based on an accumulation of expert picks, the Longhorns are given a 90.8% chance to win out for the talented player.
TCU is seen as the next most likely winner for Johnson-Rubell followed by Ohio State and Michigan. Each of those teams are given a 1.5% chance or less.
Johnson-Rubell isn’t your typical safety. On3 lists him at 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, though his top schools post would suggest he’s grown from those measurements. His illustrious career includes Freshman and Junior All-American accolades. As a sophomore, he compiled 60 tackles and six pass breakups.
The path toward a top defensive back class for Texas is clear. With four-star cornerback Hunter Moddon in the fold, adding Johnson-Rubell to five-star cornerback Kobe Black and four-star cornerback Selman Bridges would make for a dynamic secondary.
Former four-year starter and current safeties coach Blake Gideon will look to close on Johnson-Rubell in the coming months.
