Former Vanderbilt DB De’Rickey Wright has committed to Texas A&M

Former Vanderbilt defensive back De’Rickey Wright will reportedly stay in the SEC, committing to Texas A&M on Friday morning.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is living up to his word this offseason regarding using the transfer portal, now landing seven players, including former standout Vanderbilt safety De’Rickey Wright.

Wright, who appeared in 35 games and 26 starts, standing at 6’4″ and just over  217 pounds, has already accumulated 131 tackles, 17 pass deflections, three interceptions, seven tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles in his collegiate career.

Ranked as a Top 20 prospect out of Alabama in the 2019 recruiting class, Wright, due to his size, speed, and coverage ability, immediately saw the field and, after three years, ultimately came into his own during his 2023 senior campaign. Ranked as Pro Football Focus’s sixth-rated safety in the SEC and 32nd nationally with an 81.6 PFF coverage grade, Wright appeared in 10 games, recording 46 tackles (32 solo tackles), three pass deflections, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles on the season.

Wright joins former Central Michigan defensive back Trey Jones as the second safety to join the Aggies from the portal, and with both providing extensive experience on top of their collective ability, it looks like A&M’s safety rotation for the 2024 season, led by Bryce Anderson and Jacoby Mathews is completely set.
