Former UNC forward Tyler Nickel back in transfer portal

Former UNC basketball forward Tyler Nickel is back in the transfer portal after spending one season with the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Virginia Tech basketball had another disappointing season in the Atlantic Coast Conference and it has led to departures from the program.

The latest in the mass exodus of players is former North Carolina forward Tyler Nickel. After transferring to Virginia Tech this offseason, he reentered the portal on Thursday.

Nickel becomes the seventh Hokie to enter the portal since the end of the season. He spent just one season with the Hokies. Nickel averaged 8.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game this past season for the Hokies while shooting 40% from the 3-point line:

Nickel played in 33 games, primarily coming off the bench. While he was a key contributor, the Hokies struggled again.

After committing to North Carolina as a four-star forward, Nickel spent one season with the Tar Heels but opted to transfer. The lack of bench usage was likely the biggest reason he left the program and opted to head back to his home state.
