Former Texas commit Jalen Milroe named Alabama starting QB

It looks like Texas could take on a familiar face at quarterback in Week 2.

Jalen Milroe has been named the starting quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide in its season opener. He opens the season with the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders.

Milroe has had quite a story since early in his high school recruitment. The Katy product initially committed to the Texas Longhorns. He later de-committed due to staff changes and Texas pursuit of starting quarterback Quinn Ewers.

The third-year Alabama player poses a particularly interesting challenge for Texas. The strong, explosive runner commands extra attention as a ball carrier with a strong arm to attack downfield.

There have been issues for Milroe with consistency in the passing game. Some would suggest he runs more to run than to set up the downfield pass. In addition, Milroe and fellow quarterback Ty Simpson did not inspire enough confidence in the spring. It resulted in the Tide adding Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner.

There’s plenty to prove but high potential for the Tide’s Week 1 starter. He will have the opportunity to solidify his spot for the Week 2 matchup against Texas.
