Former Steeler David DeCastro takes not-so-subtle jam at ownership after release

David DeCastro understands the NFL is just a business.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made the decision to release guard David DeCastro after nine seasons with the team. The decision to make the move was partially due to concerns over recurring bone spurs in his ankle and partially to do with DeCastro’s salary-cap hit.

According to Pittsburgh radio host Andrew Filipponi, DeCastro spoke to Steelers reporter Jim Colony and when he was asked about his release with a non-football injury designation, DeCastro took a shot at ownership by saying “the owners are billionaires for a reason.”

A rather cavalier attitude from a guy who the Steelers have paid $57 million. Yes, owners are billionaires because they know how to run a business and stay profitable. And players are millionaires because they are very good at their jobs and understand their value, doing their best to maximize it in a very short period of time.

I hope DeCastro finds what he is looking for whether it is retirement or a return to the league.
