Former Sixers guard Dakota Mathias to join Team USA in the AmericaCup

Former Philadelphia 76ers guard Dakota Mathias will join Team USA in the AmericaCup Tournament.

Team USA is continuing to prepare for the 2021 Olympics after it was pushed back a year due to the global COVID pandemic. They are putting together the roster for the AmericaCup qualifying tournament in San Juan from Feb. 19 through Feb. 20 and a former Philadelphia 76ers guard will be joining them.

Dakota Mathias, who was on a two-way contract with Philadelphia before being waived, will be joining former NBA stars Joe Johnson and Isaiah Thomas in the AmericaCup Tournament. It will be a nice opportunity for him to learn from the veterans and grow his game for the next NBA chance.

Mathias averaged 6.0 points in eight games with the Sixers and he had 13 assists compared to one turnover. He was waived on Jan. 18 before Philadelphia signed Rayjon Tucker to a two-way deal.

Mathias did have a big moment in Philadelphia when he drilled a clutch 3-pointer in overtime, much to the delight of Tobias Harris, in a win over the Miami Heat back on Jan. 12. He was not in Philadelphia’s future plans, but he now has a chance to show off his skills in this tournament and continue down his NBA journey.
