Former Sixers GM Bryan Colangelo buys stake in Illawarra Hawks

Former Philadelphia 76ers general manager Bryan Colangelo has bought a stake in an Australian team.

Fans of the Philadelphia 76ers do not remember former general manager Bryan Colangelo fondly. After all, Colangelo made some questionable moves during his time with the Sixers, and who could ever forget the controversial burner twitter accounts?

Since then, Colangelo has been biding his time looking to make his next move. He did interview for the general manager position for the Chicago Bulls before it went to Arturas Karnisovas. It sounds like he has found his next move.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Colangelo has bought a stake in the Australian team Illawarra Hawks. Woj on the transaction:

This is Colangelo’s first foray back into professional basketball since his untidy exit in Philadelphia, where a social media controversy led to his resignation in 2018. A Sixers investigation revealed that his wife, Barbara, had operated multiple twitter accounts and shared private information and opinions on the Sixers and team rivals.

Colangelo does have some Australian basketball experience as Woj explains:

Colangelo worked with the longtime Australian national coach, Brett Brown, with the 76ers. One of the groups that pursued a purchase of Illawarra included the franchise’s star player of the past season: point guard LaMelo Ball. There had been serious discussions on a close on a deal that never materialized.

This is a good opportunity for Colangelo to revitalize his basketball career. [lawrence-related id=33131,33121,33113]
