Former Oregon commit picked to win Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award in 2022

This recruiting flip certainly hurt the Ducks after Mario Cristobal left. Now the player is being picked to win the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award.

Any person who has seen a relationship end in their life likely knows the urge to check back in on that person and see how they’re doing since the separation.

For fans of the Oregon Ducks, the “one that got away” could very well be four-star wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, the fifth-ranked WR in the 2022 recruiting class. McMillan originally committed to the Ducks, but after the departure of Mario Cristobal and the hiring of Dan Lanning, he flipped his commitment to the Arizona Wildcats.

Now Oregon fans might feel the urge to take a look at Tucson and see how McMillan is doing ahead of his freshman season.

The answer is likely not one that will make you get over the metaphorical breakup quickly.

“Here’s a guy who was committed to Oregon, and it seemed for the longest time that it was going to be an Oregon-USC race for him. He commits to Oregon, but Arizona never stopped,” said Brandon Huffman, with 247Sports. “He’s one of the biggest commitments Arizona has ever gotten because he is an instant impact player.”

Of course, the Ducks have done incredibly well at the wide receiver position when it comes to recruiting since the new coaching staff came to Eugene. So far, they have landed five-star Jurrion Dickey (2023), four-star Kyler Kasper (2022), and four-star Ashton Cozart (2023) in the past several months. However, it’s always going to be interesting to keep an eye on the Wildcats and see just how big of an impact McMillan can have in Tucson.

There will always be some Oregon fans who think about what could have been if he turns out to be the star we think he can be.
