Former Notre Dame commit has entered the portal after a season with Big Ten program

What could have been…

New Jersey defensive lineman [autotag]Owen Wafle[/autotag] committed to Notre Dame football in May of 2022, and kept his verbal until almost a year later.

The 6-foot, 2-inch and almost 300-pound lineman would decommit from the Irish and about three weeks later would commit to Michigan. Wafle signed with the Wolverines, but didn’t see the field this fall.

That led to him deciding that Ann Arbor wasn’t the place for him, as he entered the transfer portal on Thursday. What makes this move interesting, is that the Irish have a need at defensive tackle even with the return of Gabriel Rubio, they’ll still be losing both of the starters in Rylie Mills and Howard Cross III.

Donovan Hinish also returns, who should start alongside Rubio, but there isn’t much depth behind them. While it’s doubtful that Notre Dame goes after Wafle now that he’s in the portal, he will always wonder if he stayed with the Irish, how his career would have turned out.

Notre Dame defensive lineman Rylie Mills (99) and defensive lineman Donovan Hinish (41) celebrate getting a stop during a NCAA college football game against Florida State at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, in South Bend.
