Former Colorado commit Danny O’Neal named starting QB at San Diego State

Sean Lewis is rolling with former CU commit Danny O’Neil at quarterback in Week 1

In his first game leading the San Diego State Aztecs, former Colorado football offensive coordinator Sean Lewis will be rolling with a one-time Buffs commit as his starting quarterback.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Sunday that true freshman Danny O’Neil has received the starting nod for San Diego State in its season opener against Texas A&M Commerce on Aug. 31. O’Neil, a three-star prospect according to 247Sports, was committed to Colorado for about eight months before following Lewis to SDSU in December.

Per Kirk Kenney of the San Diego Union-Tribune, O’Neil will become the first true freshman quarterback to start for SDSU in a season opener since the Aztecs moved to Division I in 1969.

O’Neil played his high school football in Indianapolis before joining the Aztecs this spring as an early enrollee.
