Former Boston Celtics swingman James Posey, a member of the franchise’s 2008 NBA championship team, has been hired as an assistant coach with the University of Virginia women’s basketball program.
“I’m honored to have the opportunity to join the coaching staff of the women’s basketball team at the University of Virginia,” Posey told VirginiaSports.com. “I look at this opportunity as a blessing as I get to be a part of a program with great history and work alongside great basketball minds with coach Thompson and staff. I’m looking forward to drawing from my years of playing and coaching experience to bring a positive contribution to the program.”
Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Celtics in 2007-08. He scored in double figures six times off the bench that postseason, including 18 points in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Posey also played for Denver, Miami, New Orleans and Indiana during a 12-year NBA playing career. He averaged 8.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game during his career, also winning the 2006 NBA title with the Heat.
Posey boasts prior bench experience as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014-19. The Cavs won the 2016 NBA championship during Posey’s tenure there.
