Now retired and living in Boulder, former Big Eight Commissioner Chuck Neinas still has a strong pulse on college football. He recently chatted with BuffZone’s Brain Howell and give his thoughts on Colorado’s unique situation.
Neinas, who led the Big Eight from 1971-80 and was later an interim commissioner for the Big 12 from 2011-12, emphasized that TV networks are “calling the shots” when it comes to the impending realignment. Both USC and UCLA left the Pac-12 for more money in the Big Ten, largely thanks to TV contracts.
Colorado, however, remains stuck in the likely dying Pac-12. Fortunately, Neinas shared some optimism in that Boulder — plus the Denver TV market — offer a lot to other conferences looking to grow (h/t BuffZone):
“Boulder is an attractive place,” Neinas said. “Now, that doesn’t mean you’ve got good football but they have had good football (in the past). Tad (Boyle) has done a great job with basketball. … The football has obviously been up and down, but they’ve been a good member of the Pac-12. They didn’t keep up with Utah, but the point of the matter is, it’s a good member; it’s an attractive institution; it has basically good athletics.”
