With the NBA season in its final week, the topics to entertain basketball fans have slowly dwindled. Once either Stephen Curry and the Warriors finish off the Celtics in the coming days, or the Celtics have enough luck left in the tank to hand Golden State another devastating loss, the book should be closed on all things NBA for a while.
Well, it should be, but we know that won’t be the case. The NBA offseason has its usual headline-encompassing events such as free agency, the draft and the summer league. But it appears that the surprise that might contend for some off-season headlines is talk of NBA expansion.
Professional boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather, is the latest sports figure to express interest in an NBA expansion team in Las Vegas.
Boxing insider, Sam Gordon, of the Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote about Mayweather’s recent pursuit to own an NBA team.
“Me and my team have been working behind the scenes with the NBA. I can’t say exactly where, but I’m working on getting a team.”
Mayweather is a Grand Rapids native but his home for the last several years has been Las Vegas. It very much makes sense that he is prioritizing owning an expansion team that could end up in the City of Sin.
But the ball doesn’t stop rolling there. Earlier this week, LeBron James mentioned on his HBO show The Shop how he eventually wants to pursue ownership of an eventual NBA team in Las Vegas —Bet For The Win’s own Prince Grimes broke that down here.
Per Grimes:
“James is part of Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox among other properties, and reportedly has interest in a Vegas NBA team. An NBA spokesperson denied the report at the time, but the mayor of Las Vegas confirmed the city’s interest in an NBA team and having been in communication with commissioner Adam Silver.”
