Not even 24 hours after Florida offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Brian Johnson left to coach quarterbacks for the Philadelphia Eagles, it appears coach Dan Mullen has already made a hire.
He will be promoting off-field analyst Garrick McGee to an on-field assistant role. Though this role hasn’t been announced, it’s assumed that he will be the quarterbacks coach.
McGee has both offensive coordinator and head coach experience. Prior to joining Florida’s staff this season, he was the wide receivers coach at Missouri in 2019. He was the offensive coordinator at Arkansas from 2010-11, coaching Ryan Mallett under Bobby Petrino.
He also had coordinator stints at Illinois, Northwestern and Louisville, coaching Heisman winner Lamar Jackson at the latter. He was the head coach at UAB from 2012-13, compiling a 5-19 record.
With the hires of assistant coaches Wesley McGriff and Jules Montinar, the promotion of McGee completes Florida’s staff. It’s unclear who will take over the offensive coordinator role, but it has been speculated that John Hevesy and/or Billy Gonzalez could return to their co-offensive coordinator roles.
