The future of Florida football may rest on DJ Lagway’s shoulders, but he’s still a five-star phenom doing unreal things on a high school field in Willis, Texas, for now.
Lagway and the Willis Wildkats wrapped up a perfect, 10-0, regular season last week and are eyeing a playoff run in the UIL Texas Class 6A Division 2 playoffs. At his current pace, Lagway could put up historic numbers if the team goes deep enough.
He sits at 3,521 passing yards and 48 passing touchdowns through 10 games, according to MaxPreps. His 352.1 average yards per game would put him at No. 1 all-time with a 6-0 run in the playoffs, albeit in two more games than Levellend’s Nick Gerber in 2016. But high school football in Texas is as competitive as it gets, and there’s no guarantee that Willis will make it out of the first round.
The Wildkats face the Nimitz Cougars in the bi-district round. The Cougars finished the season with two losses, but a 20-7 season-opening win over Grand Oaks points the prediction needle in Willis’ favor. The Wildkats also faced Grand Oaks this year, but it was hardly a contest. Lagway and Co. leveled them, 62-13.
Regardless of how Lagway’s high school career closes out, Florida appears to have an elite quarterback on its hands. Signing day isn’t for another six weeks, but Lagway has been the leader of this class and shows no signs of flipping.
