The state of Louisiana is usually locked down by Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers. On Friday, they kept one of the top prospects in the country at home.

Five-star safety Jacoby Matthews has announced his commitment to LSU. His final six schools included Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, Texas, and USC. Matthews decided to pull the trigger on the in-state school, even with the NCAA dead period being lifted.

Texas was thought to be in the race for Matthews. Defensive backs coach Terry Joseph and safeties coach Blake Gideon were listed as the primary recruiters per 247Sports. Two defensive backs are already in the class in four-star safety Bryan Allen and four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. Matthews would have been a nice compliment at strong safety.

There was buzz surrounding Matthews potentially moving to linebacker someday thanks to his size. Texas has experience doing so with former five-star safety DeMarvion Overshown, who now stars as the Longhorns’ MIKE.

Matthews joins the No. 3 class on the 247Sports composite. He makes up LSU’s third five-star, all of which are from the state of Louisiana. The Tigers now have 13 total commitments.

On the 247Sports composite, Matthews ranks as the No. 30 player and No. 2 safety in the country for the 2022 recruiting class. Within his home state, he is the No. 3 prospect.
