Five final thoughts on the 2020-21 Oklahoma Sooners basketball season

Five final thoughts on the 2020-2021 Oklahoma Sooners basketball season after their run at the NCAA Tournament ended on Monday.

Austin Reaves should go in the books as a historically great Sooner

At time of writing, Austin Reaves’ career at Oklahoma is still up in the air as to whether or not it has concluded or will go on for another season. Thanks to a special NCAA waiver allowing seniors to return next season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he may return to the team for another year should he so choose.

When asked after the loss to Gonzaga what his plans were, Reaves said he hadn’t yet made his decision. So we don’t know at this point if we’ve seen him don the crimson and cream for the last time just yet.

But, either way, Reaves should be considered an all-time Sooner. Not just for his play on the court, but for the way he has represented the program since quickly becoming one of the leaders of it since transferring over from Wichita State.

An All-Big 12 player this season, he was the leader of the team both on and off the court. He left it all out on the floor every single time he played and the argument could be made he is one of the more underrated Oklahoma athletes, regardless of sport, in recent memory. The guy can flat out play.

Pair that with being a great leader who always says the right things at the microphone and complements his teammates every chance he gets, and he has been a real asset to this program.

Should he return another year, his place in Sooner history will become even more cemented. But even if he doesn’t, his time in Norman has been special to watch unfold.

Next, is it time for De’Vion Harmon to shine?
