First quarter of 2023 is physical for Cardinals, but too physical

They were twice flagged for personal fouls in the first quarter and flagged for 67 penalty yards on one drive.

The Arizona Cardinals trailed the Washington Commanders 7-3 after one quarter of play in the 2023 season. The defense looks different.

The defense was very physical but also too physical and it cost them.

On the Commander’s second offensive series, the Cardinals were penalized 67 yards in a 91-yard touchdown drive.

Linebacker Kyzir White leveled quarterback Sam Howell near the sideline and was called for a personal foul.

Safety Jalen Thompson was flagged for illegal use of the helmet on a brutal hit on receiver Jahan Dotson at the sideline.

Then cornerback Marco Wilson was penalized for a 47-yard pass interference call.

In the second quarter before Zaven Collins picked off a pass, defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter was called for roughing the passer, too.

The new coaching staff preaches violence and discipline. The violence is there so far. The discipline seems to be lacking early.
