A year ago during fantasy drafts, the 1st overall pick in most of them was Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor. A year later, Taylor is still being viewed as a RB1, but the contentious nature of his relationship with the Colts has him coming off draft boards as a 3rd-round pick.

Below, we look at Jonathan Taylor‘s 2023 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Taylor is entering the final year of his rookie deal and wants to be the highest-paid running back in the league. He has requested a trade that was initially rejected by Colts owner Jim Irsay. Taylor then missed time in training camp with ankle and back injuries as well as an excused absence. Earlier this week, he was given the permission to seek a trade.

There is no questioning Taylor’s talent and his significance to the Colts offense, but the timing of the NFL making it clear that running backs are never going to be among the highest-paid players in the league, Taylor and other young runners are learning the hard way that the field has tilted.

Given his limbo status, Taylor’s ADP finds him behind Lions rookie Jahmyr Gibbs (26.04) and front of fellow disgruntled holdout Josh Jacobs (26.72). He finds himself slightly ahead of Steelers go-to back Najee Harris (31.43) and reliable veteran Joe Mixon (33.69).

Where should you draft Taylor?

He will be one of the biggest rolls of the dice of any player being drafted to be an every-week starter. Until he signs a deal, nothing is certain.

The Colts aren’t likely to accept a low-ball offer — especially from AFC teams — and may dig their heels in the sand. If Taylor ends up in Miami, he likely vaults over Gibbs and Jacobs. The problem is being aware of his situation prior to your draft.

If Taylor signs with Miami, his value jumps. If he re-signs with the Colts (or agrees to play out this season to get to free agency), Taylor if worth drafting where his is currently slotted. But if you don’t have an answer before your draft, the best bet may be to let someone else take the risk and grab a solid alternative like Harris or Mixon.
