Fantasy football draft: Where to target Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert

Analyzing Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert’s 2021 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

Even as the sixth-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, not much was expected from Los Angeles Chargers rookie QB Justin Herbert. The first-year player from Oregon delivered in a huge way as the Offensive Rookie of the Year huge after stepping in for the injured Tyrod Taylor in Week 2. Below, we look at Justin Herbert’s 2021 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Herbert wasn’t too shabby in fantasy, either, finishing eighth among quarterbacks in total fantasy points and seventh in average fantasy points per game among those with at least six games played.

Justin Herbert’s ADP: 27.75

Herbert checks in with the 25th-highest ADP in redraft leagues. He’s going just ahead of the likes of Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon, Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and Seahawks WR DK Metcalf. That’s early in the third round, but keep in mind two-quarterback format ADPs are being weighed here as well.

Among quarterbacks themselves, only Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs, ADP: 6.70), Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills, ADP: 12.51), Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals, ADP: 16.00), Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens, ADP: 17.94) and Dak Prescott (Dallas Cowboys, ADP: 21.72) are coming off the board earlier, on average, than Herbert.

Where should you take Justin Herbert in your fantasy football draft?

Herbert debuted with 27.4 fantasy points in that aforementioned Week 2 emergency start against Mahomes and the Chiefs; he didn’t score fewer than 22 points in any of his first nine starts.

He hit a slow patch in Weeks 12-14, averaging 16.7 fantasy points but then bounced back with a 28.1-point average over his final three contests to cement his top-eight QB fantasy finish on the season.

The Bolts have since changed coaching staffs, with new head coach Brandon Staley and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi stepping in, and upgraded their offensive line with free-agent C Corey Linsley and first-round pick OT Rashawn Slater.

As for Herbert’s targets, WRs Keenan Allen and Mike Williams return and RB Austin Ekeler is back as a highly productive receiver out of the backfield. The only big change among the primary pass-catchers is Jared Cook replacing Hunter Henry as the top tight end.

So where to pick Herbert in your re-draft league? In two-quarterback formats, Herbert is a no-doubt second rounder. For single-QB leagues where quarterbacks aren’t at as much of a premium, Herbert is an ideal fifth- or sixth-round target after the rush to land one of the top-five quarterbacks is over.

Secure the second-year QB there and be thrilled with the value and real potential for top-tier QB1 upside.
