The New York Giants and New York Jets, who have played their home games in New Jersey for decades now, are defendants in a lawsuit that requests the two teams return to New York or drop the New York name.
From the New York Daily News:
“Plaintiff Abdiell Suero, of Greenwich Village, asked in the class action complaint for an order returning both franchises to New York in 2025 — along with the multibillion payout nearly a half-century after the Giants moved to the swamps of Jersey.
“If the Giants and Jets want to call themselves New York teams, they need to come back to New York,” said Suero in court papers. “I’ve traveled to and from MetLife Stadium by mass transit and car service, and both ways are a nightmare.”
Court papers also asked for the two teams to be rebranded as the East Rutherford Giants and Jets for as long as they continue to play in New Jersey.”
In a statement on the matter, the Giants said “this case has no merit and we will defend it vigorously.”
This appears to be a complete waste of time.
This subject was broached when the two teams first crossed the river — the Giants in 1976 and the Jets in 1984 — and the league allowed them to keep New York in their name because both maintained offices in New York and East Rutherford — the town in which MetLife Stadium is located — which is considered part of the New York Metropolitan area.
If one wants to complain about the travel, they also would have no leg to stand on. MetLife is approximately the same distance as Yankee Stadium from Times Square, and closer than CitiField:
Times Square to Yankee Stadium: eight miles
Times Square to MetLife Stadium: 8.5 miles
Times Square to CitiField: 10.5 miles
