Fan killed outside stadium following Tijuana-Chivas match

A 24-year-old fan was shot and killed outside Tijuana’s Estadio Caliente following Friday’s game between Club Tijuana and Chivas, local officials have confirmed.

During the Liga MX match, fights between the two sets of fans broke out in the stands. The conflict continued after the game, with a man found injured outside access three of the stadium.

The victim was treated on the scene and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Mexican Football Federation said in a statement that it had opened an investigation into the events, and was prepared to issue sanctions.

Liga MX also issued a statement saying that it had been in touch with officials from the home team.

“The board of directors of the Xolos de Tijuana Club has been in direct communication with the authorities and with Liga MX, to make available all the resources and information collected that will help clarify the events,” the league said.

“Both Liga MX and Club Tijuana will continue to monitor the development of this unfortunate situation in order to take appropriate measures based on relevant investigations by the responsible authorities.”

Friday was the second time in 2024 that a fan had been killed outside a stadium following a Liga MX game, In January, a fan died after being hit by a vehicle outside Estadio Corona following a match between Santos Laguna and Monterrey.
