The Jets and Giants haven’t done much winning lately, but they may have a chance to do so court after a fan filed a lawsuit demanding that the teams return to their former homes in New York.
Per the New York Daily News, a $6 billion lawsuit filed in Manhattan Federal Court is demanding that the Jets and Giants leave New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium for a return to the Big Apple. Plaintiff Abdiell Suero, of Greenwich Village, asked in the class action complaint for both teams to return to New York by 2025 to go along with a multibillion payout.
The lawsuit also asks for the Jets and Giants to rebrand from New York to East Rutherford for as long as they remain in New Jersey.
“If the Giants and Jets want to call themselves New York teams, they need to come back to New York,” Suero said in court papers. “I’ve traveled to and from MetLife Stadium by mass transit and car service, and both ways are a nightmare.”
The Jets have yet to respond to the lawsuit, while the Giants responded with a statement saying the case has “no merit” and will be defended “vigorously.”
The Giants moved from New York to New Jersey in 1976 after struggling to find a consistent home following the end of their nearly two-decades-long stay at Yankee Stadium. The Jets followed eight years later after playing at Shea Stadium in Queens from 1964-83. The Bills are the NFL’s only franchise in the state of New York.
“Plaintiff and the class of New York Giants and Jets fans respectfully request that both teams return to the State of New York so they can enjoy all the healthy social, psychological and physical benefits associated with sports identifications of their home NFL teams,” reads the court filing.
“The move to New Jersey financially benefited the defendants alone at the expense of plaintiff and the class of millions of Giants and Jets fans… Plaintiff and the class have suffered mental and emotional damage, including depression, sadness and anxiety … as a result of the Defendants’ conduct.”
