Families chosen for Walker’s visit all are participating in the federal Family Self-Sufficiency Program, which is designed to reduce dependence on welfare and rent subsidies. In order to join, the head of each family must sign a contract and agree to a training program that includes specific long-term goals. Among the services available are child care, transportation, education, job training, financial literacy and home ownership.
