Falcons ranked 27th in PFF’s pre-draft power rankings

The #Falcons were ranked 27th in Pro Football Focus’ pre-draft power rankings

NFL teams use the different stages of the offseason to gradually improve their rosters, but for the last several years, the Falcons’ lack of cap space has forced them to rely mostly on the draft to add talent.

Finally in 2023, Atlanta had the money to add the top safety available in Jessie Bates III, and to address needs on both sides of the ball. Other signings included defensive linemen David Onyemata and Calais Campbell, linebacker Kaden Elliss, and cornerback Mike Hughes.

The Falcons also traded for tight end Jonnu Smith, brought back Lorenzo Carter and signed wide receiver Mack Hollins. So, where does the team rank going into the 2023 NFL draft? Pro Football Focus listed the Falcons at No. 27 in their new pre-draft NFL power rankings:

The Falcons signed one of the best safeties in the league in Jessie Bates III. His 72.6 PFF coverage grade over the past two seasons ranks 30th among safeties, but when you factor in the impressive 2020 season, his three-year PFF coverage grade of 90.5 trails only Kevin Byard of the Tennessee Titans and Marcus Williams of the Baltimore Ravens. The Falcons’ safety room finished 26th in the league in PFF grade last season, so this is a much-needed upgrade. — Amelia Probst

PFF also named quarterback Marcus Mariota as the team’s biggest loss so far this offseason. Mariota, who was released at the start of the NFL Scouting Combine, has since signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as Jalen Hurts’ backup.

The Falcons haven’t lost many key players otherwise. Right tackle Kaleb McGary returned to Atlanta on a three-year deal and right guard Chris Lindstrom signed a five-year extension.

Atlanta also has the No. 8 pick in the 2023 NFL draft, which will allow the team to add more talent before the season begins.
