Ex-Giant Saquon Barkley’s father arrested in New York on gun charge

After being arrested on gun charges, the father of ex-Giants RB Saquon Barkley said he needed it for “safety because of who my son is.”

Former New York Giants Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley’s father, Alibay, was allegedly caught with a loaded weapon while driving in the Bronx this week.

The New York Post reports that police found the weapon — a pink pistol — in his vehicle.

“(It’s for) for safety because of who my son is,” the senior Barkley said.

The 55 year-old Barkley was pulled over for covered license plates Wednesday evening at East 140th Street and Third Avenue in Mott Haven, according to a complaint filed in Bronx Criminal Court.

An officer looked in the center console of Barkley’s 2018 Chevy Corvette and found the pink SSCY model firearm — with eight live cartridges in the magazine, the court papers state.

Alibay claimed the gun was his wife’s because they come back to the Bronx from their home in Pennsylvania quite often and it was needed for safety reasons.

Barkley and his wife, Tonya Johnson, moved their family out of the Bronx to Whitehall, Pennsylvania in 2001 when Saquon was four years old.

The Post added that Barkley, who had prior “brushes” with the law was “held on $5,000 cash bail or $15,000 bond. Prosecutors had requested that he be held on $15,000 cash bail or $45,000 bond.”

WABC-TV also reports that the senior Barkley does not possess a license to carry a firearm in New York, which is the same crime that landed retired Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress in prison.
