You know football season is nigh when the Michigan football program officially publishes its 2020 roster online.
There’s a lot to take in this year, with various additions, a higher-than-usual amount of number changes — which was bound to happen since there’s a new NCAA prohibiting more than two players to wear the same number (which is why two true freshmen currently are listed as No. 6/TBD) — and, of course, the usual over/under evaluation that comes with the weight listing.

Additions via transfer
Elijah Pierre, defensive tackle, is a grad transfer from Brown University. In 2019, he had 13 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks in eight games.
Edward Warinner, linebacker, was a known factor, the son of Michigan offensive line coach Ed Warinner. He transferred from rival MSU and registered 3 tackles in 2019 for the Spartans.
Significant number changes:
- Vincent Gray is now wearing No. 4
- Chris Evans, upon his return, will now wear No. 9 instead of No. 12
- Sammy Faustin is now wearing No. 9
- Jake Moody is now wearing No. 13
- Quinten Johnson is now wearing No. 14
- Jalen Perry is now wearing No. 16
- Tyler Cochran is now wearing No. 28
- Christian Turner is now wearing No. 28

Biggest gainers/losers via weight
It’s probably the thing that fans and the media pay most attention to every offseason, and with good reason. Those who play positions where they need to move people, you generally want to see them bulk up. Same with some undersized skill position players.
Sometimes, you have players who have bad weight and choose to slim down — or at least you hope that’s the case.
Here’s what we found from both sides of the team weighing in.
Biggest gainers
- The offensive line as a whole, apparently. Zak Zinter, an early-enrollee offensive lineman topped everyone on the roster, having gained an astounding 34 pounds from the time of his listing back in January. He’s now 334-pounds. Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jack Stewart and true freshman Jeffrey Persi are both up 27 pounds. Fellow freshman offensive lineman Reece Atteberry is up 24 pounds to 304, sophomore Luke Fisher is up 22 pounds, Griffin Korican is up 15, and 2019 classmates Trente Jones and Trevor Keegan are both up 11. Not to be lost in the mix, but Joel Honigford gained an impressive 21 pounds.
- Michigan fans have been waiting to hear who will be next up at defensive tackle with Michael Dwumfour having transferred to Rutgers. While Chris Hinton has been noted as the heir apparent, fellow DT Donovan Jeter apparently will have his say as a more dynamic space-eater type, having put on 28 pounds, and now weighing 318.
- It’s not quite the 25 that we were told (and have mentioned on the Locked On Wolverines Podcast), but Erick All is up 13 pounds to 242.
- True freshman defensive lineman Kris Jenkins was listed in January at 239, but he’s up 26 pounds to 265. Other notable true freshman gains? Cornerback Andre Seldon is up 18 pounds to 172 while linebacker Osman Savage is up 17 to 242.
- Redshirt freshman Mike Morris definitely will more so look the part of the behemoth he came in as, having gained 14 pounds. He’s up to 276 as a defensive end. Fellow second-year DE Gabe Newburg is up an equally as impressive 15 pounds.
- New DT transfer Elijah Pierre gained 22 pounds from his listing as a redshirt junior at Brown. He’s now up to 297.
Biggest losers
- The ‘biggest loser’ goes to fifth-year center Andrew Vastardis, who now clocks in at 296-pounds. The difference? He was 319 at this time last year, which puts his weight loss at 23 pounds.
- Naturally, fullback Ben Mason was going to have to trim down, since he was bulking up to play defensive tackle last year. Now back in the running backs room, he’s down 16 pounds to 254.
- Oddly, defensive end Aidan Hutchinson is down 9 pounds to 269. He should be that much faster for it.
- Nico Collins trimmed down by 7 pounds, while Kwity Paye lost 5.
