ESPN personality Pat McAfee explored how much Caleb Williams changed his NFL draft value — if at all — at the NFL combine this past weekend. One could say that the issue might already be irrelevant. If the Chicago Bears have already made their mind up that they want to take Caleb at No. 1, there’s no point in discussing Caleb’s perceived draft value. If, however, the Bears either haven’t made up their mind or are at least fielding potential trade offers (but knowing they need a massive offer to even consider a trade), then the topic of Caleb’s draft stock still means something.
The Bears might be firm in knowing what they want, but they do have to trade Justin Fields and clear space for Caleb Williams. Until that trade is executed and finalized, there will be some uncertainty surrounding Caleb and the Bears. Once Justin Fields gets traded, then everyone can fully prepare for the Caleb era in Chicago.
In terms of Caleb’s draft stock, there’s only so much that an interview can achieve. Caleb Williams will throw passes at USC’s pro day on Wednesday, March 20. If the Bears haven’t made a final decision by March 19 — and have not traded Fields by then as well — USC’s pro day might represent a final, important moment for the Bears.
