ESPN updates Texas A&M’s FPI ranking following the bye week

Ahead of a pivotal matchup with South Carolina this weekend, ESPN updated its FPI ranking of Texas A&M following the bye week.

Texas A&M (4-3, 2-2 SEC) is fresh off its bye week as the team prepares to host South Carolina from inside Kyle Field. Despite being off the schedule last week, ESPN’s FPI took no rest days as it updated its model following Week 8.

Here’s the latest breakdown of how the Aggies stack up in ESPN’s FPI power rankings, including the strength of the current record, as well as offense and defensive efficiency.

Overall ranking: No. 15 (No change)

Unlike those who are ready to write off the Aggies during the bye week, ESPN’s model is standing pat, and rightfully so. Texas A&M has no talent shortage on the roster, and their recent defensive performances must be commended. But unless the Maroon and White find a spark on offense, it’s not far-fetched to anticipate this overall FPI ranking to take a hit week to week.

Strength of Record: No. 34 (-1)

The Aggies’ strength of record ranking dropped one spot since their last update ahead of the bye week. ESPN’s model clearly dinged A&M for their road loss to Tennessee, but given that the Maroon and White kept it competitive, it’s clear the model isn’t penalizing them to a drastic extent.

Offensive efficiency: 68.9 (No. 24)

A&M stayed put at No. 24 overall, but their 68.9 offensive efficiency decreased from 71.1 before the bye week. Granted, this dip was to be expected after the Aggies’ drop-off in scoring as of late. After averaging 38.6 PPG through the first five weeks, A&M scored at just 16.5 PPG in their last two contests.

Defensive efficiency: 79.9 (No. 12)

Not only did the Aggies’ defensive efficiency avoid a drop-off after the bye week, D.J. Durkin’s squad saw an uptick with a 79.9 grade, which ranks 12th overall in ESPN’s FPI. Truth be told, the Maroon and White’s inspired performance on defense has been a lone silver lining amid this two-game skid. On the season, A&M’s defense allows just 19.9 PPG to opponents, which is 34th in the country.
