Some of you may be asking if there really are people out there who are unsure of Cooper DeJean’s talent. I am here to tell you, unfortunately, it appears so and that some may even be burying their head in the sand ignoring his talents.
The Iowa Hawkeyes cornerback is littered among All-American teams, previously mocked in the first rounds of the 2024 NFL draft everywhere, and even the top cornerback on the draft board of Mel Kiper, a draft expert. Sadly, some are still stuck at the station and missed the train carrying Cooper DeJean to the first round.
Matt Miller of ESPN provided his recent 2024 NFL mock draft; the glaring absence is DeJean’s. The absence in and of itself is questionable to most football fans. What makes the absence even more head-scratching is the decision to have six other cornerbacks go in the first round.
Now, this isn’t to say these other players aren’t talented or disparage what they have done but believing there are six cornerbacks in college better than Cooper DeJean is curious at best.
In the NFL they carry 53-man rosters which makes versatility much more important to teams. DeJean can play cornerback, be a gunner on punt coverage, and return punts with the best of them. His ability to be a Swiss Army Knife for an NFL team should propel him up draft boards even further.
The other six cornerbacks are talented and going to have an NFL career. That said, there isn’t a world where six of them offer a better combination of talent, athleticism, and versatility than Iowa’s Cooper DeJean.
