ESPN recently listed the top redshirt freshmen poised for a breakout in the 2021 college football season.
There were six prospects mentioned from the class of 2020 and Texas wide receiver Troy Omeire was among the talented group. Prior to suffering an ACL tear that sidelined him last season, Omeire stood out throughout fall camp as a true freshman, showcasing his unique athleticism with numerous acrobatic catches.
He quickly climbed the depth chart and was considered to be competing for a starting role at the time his unfortunate injury occurred. Here’s what ESPN analyst Tom Luginbill had to say about Omeire’s potential in 2021:
Longhorns fans should feel pretty excited about Omeire’s presence, especially based on how Steve Sarkisian utilized H-back/WR Jahleel Billingsley last year with Alabama.
The former four-star wide receiver is a matchup nightmare — his 6-foot-3, 230-pound frame makes him look like a tight end, but he moves like a wide receiver. Plus, he can play both inside and outside. His makeup and versatility are reminiscent to that of first-round draft pick Kyle Pitts.
Omeire forces opponents to decide how they categorize him in various personnel groupings, and if he can even remotely flash as an in-line blocker, Texas will have even more of an advantage against nickel defenses.
Omeire was rated the No. 43 wide receiver prospect in the 2020 recruiting class according to 247Sports. The Sugar Land native will be receiving passes from an inexperienced quarterback this season, but if he can stay healthy, Omeire very well could lead the Longhorns in receptions this year.
