Eric Tomlinson eager to get started with Giants

Tight end Eric Tomlinson is anxious to head north and get started with the New York Giants in his second stint.

The New York Giants are going big on offense, especially at tight end. It’s apparent they want to run the football and will be using two tight end alignments on many plays.

In free agency, they signed the massive 6-foot-8 Levine Toilolo to help in the run game and now have brought back the 6-foot-6, 265-pound Eric Tomlinson, who was waived by the Giants after a three-week stint last September and spent the remainder of the season with the New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders.

Tomlinson has been well-traveled, but has never been without a job since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of UTEP in 2015. He began his career with the Eagles and Texans before moving on to the Jets and then the Giants. He’s back in Blue and is looking forward to his second chance.

“This is a great fit for me,” Tomlinson told the El Paso Times. “They have a new coaching staff, I’m familiar with some of the coaches and all around this was a good fit. I’m not worried [about coronavirus], that didn’t bother me. I have a couple of family members up there, it’s just crazy, they’ve been locked in for a few weeks.”

Tomlinson is not letting the lock-down over the outbreak set him back. He is working out in his Houston home waiting for the call from the Giants when it’s safe to come north.

“I have a weight room in my garage,” said Tomlinson. “I’m able to get my work in.”

He will join a group of tight ends that includes Toilolo, Evan Engram, Kaden Smith, Garrett Dickerson and C.J. Conrad, not mention any rookies they might draft or sign.

It won’t be easy for Tomlinson to crack the roster, but the Giants could conceivably carry four tight ends on the roster this season.
