Eric Bieniemy: ‘Why not Washington?’

Eric Bieniemy is fired up to be in Washington.

When new Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy took the podium at his introductory press conference Thursday, he had to know he’d be asked why he’d leave Kansas City for Washington.

Sure enough, it was the first question he received.

ESPN’s John Keim asked Bieniemy, “why Washington?”

Bieniemy had a simple, yet firm answer:

“Why not Washington?” Bieniemy said.

“Look at all the talent. Look at the players they have. I have never backed down from a challenge. I embrace this challenge.”

At one point, Bieniemy referred to the players in the front row at his press conference, saying he was fired up. Several of Washington’s young players, including wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, were sitting in the front row.

Winning press conferences mean nothing. After all, if that was the case, Washingon would have more than three trophies in the trophy case. However, Bieniemy crushed his initial meeting with the local media. He answered every question with confidence, including the one about why he hasn’t landed a head coaching job. Bieniemy commanded the room — no pun intended.

Everyone can make their own assumptions as to where Bieniemy would be if Washington hadn’t offered him the job. Does it really matter? He’s an upgrade for the Commanders. He has a chip on his shoulder, as do Washington’s offensive players. If Bieniemy improves Washington’s offense as many believe he will, it will be much more difficult for NFL teams to keep ignoring his prospects as a head coach.

With one answer, Bieniemy endeared himself to many fans: Why not Washington?
