After having his fifth-year option picked up, Denver Broncos outside linebacker Bradley Chubb is about to get a big pay raise in 2022.
Chubb had a base salary of $920,000 last year and he’s now set to have a base salary of $12,716,000 this fall, according to Spotrac.com. If Chubb wants to get a contract extension and remain in Denver beyond the 2022 season, he’ll have to have a big bounce-back year.
Since joining the Broncos in 2017, Chubb has battled through finger, knee and ankle injuries. Between those injuries and a brief battle with COVID-19, Chubb missed a total of 24 games over the last three seasons.
In the seven games Chubb did play in last season, he totaled only 21 tackles and failed to record a sack.
“This year was honestly probably my worst year as a pro, if I do say so myself,” Chubb said on Jan. 8. “All offseason last year I dealt with an ankle [injury], and I was just trying to get back for OTAs. Then, as soon as I got healthy my other ankle went. It was just one of those things that was tiring on me mentally and physically. I’m nowhere near where I want to be.
“This offseason is probably my first time since my rookie year I’m coming out fully healthy going into the offseason, so I’m so excited about that, and I’m so excited to just put my head down and work.”
Chubb will have to prove to the Broncos in 2022 that he can stay on the field, and returning to his rookie form certainly wouldn’t hurt his chance of getting an extension. After totaling 12 sacks in 16 games as a rookie, Chubb has since recorded just 8.5 sacks in his last 25 games.
“I don’t want anything more than to help this team win and to take this organization back to that winning pedigree that everybody knows and loves because the fans deserve it, the players deserve it and we all deserve it,” the edge defender said.
He’s saying all the right things. Now Chubb has to go out and prove it.
