In the NFL there are matchups within the matchup and on Sunday, Darius Slay and Davante Adams will meet in the game’s most important contest.
Last season at Lambeau Field, Adams had 10 catches for 180 yards last season vs. the Eagles before exiting the game with an injury. Darius Slay was acquired for matchups like this one and he’s familiar with the Packers’ star wide receiver.
Slay and Adams played against each other in the NFC North, with the Eagles cornerback never missing a game against Green Bay as he watched the Packers star go from 2014 second-round pick into one of the NFL’s elite receivers.
In Detroit, Slay played the coverage that was called and spent time in zone and sometimes not even matched up on Adams.
The results in Detroit were up and down for both competitors.
Slay vs. Adams since 2015:
2015: 0 targets
2016: 1 target, 1 catch, 7 yards
2017: 1 target, 1 catch, 9 yards
2018: 9 targets, 7 catches, 99 yards, TD
2019: 5 targets, 4 catches, 63 yards
There’s a healthy respect between both players and Slay’s ability to play Adams one on one could open up the opportunity for Jim Schwartz to blitz Aaron Rodgers and hopefully get the Packers’ star quarterback off of his spot.
Adams leads the league in receptions per game (8.2) and receiving yards per game (100.9) and he’ll likely be targeted early and often by quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
If Slay can contain Adams on his own and the Eagles can get pressure on Aaron Rodgers, Philadelphia will have a chance to pull off the huge upset.
