When none of your starting wide receivers accounts for 500 total yards in a season, it’s kind of hard to consistently get credit for being one of the league’s top passers.
In a list of the NFL’s top-10 deep passers from , NFL.com’s Nick Shook, Eagles star quarterback Carson Wentz was omitted, while players like Baker Mayfield, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Matt Ryan made the list.
Shook utilized a metric system that values completion percentage above expectation (the difference between a quarterback’s actual completion percentage and expected completion percentage).
1. Dak Prescott
2. Russell Wilson
3. Patrick Mahomes
4. Tom Brady
5. Kyler Murray
6. Deshaun Watson
7. Kirk Cousins
8. Ryan Fitzpatrick
9. Matt Ryan
10. Baker Mayfield
This is the same Carson Wentz that landed a top-10 ranking in deep-ball accuracy last season and he stood out when throwing 26-30 yards (5th) as well as 41+ yards (7th), and was great against edge pressure and outside the pocket (ranking 6th in both categories).
Wentz had a completion percentage of 35.1% and a 79.4 passer rating on passes over 20 yards downfield in 2019 per PFF and ranked ahead of names like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees, Kirk Cousins, and Phillip Rivers.
