A New Orleans Saints rookie is on the move: first-year linebacker Joe Bachie was signed away from the Saints’ practice squad by the Philadelphia Eagles, who the Saints will be visiting next week. Bachie initially signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State, earning higher contract guarantees than some drafted players.

Bachie, 22, was talked up often by veteran players and Saints linebackers coach Michael Hodges over the summer after quickly picking up the defense. But his struggles in making an impact on special teams kept him in reserve on the practice squad once final roster cuts were filed.

The Eagles defense is short handed in the back seven, having lost many of their notable linebackers and defensive backs to injuries or free agency. Top cornerback Darius Slay exited Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers with a leg injury that was reported to be not as severe as it first seemed, but his status is in question moving forwards.

There’s a chance Bachie could play against the Saints next week at Lincoln Financial Field. If he had found a niche to fill in the kicking game like other backups Craig Robertson or Kaden Elliss, he might have taken their roster spots. Philly can certainly use the help as their season circles the drain at 3-8-1.
