Dwight Howard passes Wes Unseld for 12th on all-time rebounding list

Although the Sixers lost to the Hawks on Monday, Dwight Howard climbed the charts.

Dwight Howard may have just become a member of a Philadelphia 76ers, but he’s been a dominant force in the NBA for quite some time.

On Monday night, in his 1,124th career game, Howard was one of the few bright spots for the Sixers in a 112-94 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

In 35 minutes of action off the bench, Howard turned in a seven-point, 11-rebound effort, giving him a total of 13,770 rebounds over the course of his career.

As a result, Howard moved into 12th on the NBA’s list of all-time rebounders, surpassing Wes Unseld, whose 13-year career saw the big man pull down 13,769 rebounds.

In case you’re wondering, the NBA’s all-time rebounding leader is the legendary Wilt Chamberlain. Aside from scoring 100 points in a single game, Chamberlain averaged 22.9 rebounds per game over the course of his illustrious 14-year career, totaling 23,924 rebounds. It’s probably safe to say nobody will be catching him.

Bill Russell ranks second with 21,620 rebounds while Mose Malone (17,834), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (17,440) and Artis Gilmore (16,330) round out the top five.

Although we don’t know how much longer Howard’s career will continue, it doesn’t seem like that he will have an opportunity to crack the top five, to say the least.

He will enter play on Jan. 12 trailing Walt Bellamy by 471 rebounds for 11th all-time and Nate Thurmond by 694 rebounds for 10th all-time.

D12 certainly should have a chance at cracking the top-10 this season. That’s quite an accomplishment, and it certainly would be something special for him to do as a member of the Sixers.

That’s true even though he just arrived in Philadelphia.
