Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson bought the remains of the XFL on Monday just before the defunct league was set to go to auction. Johnson and a partner, RedBird Capital, paid $15 million to keep the XFL alive.

Johnson and his wife paid half of the $7.5 million, making them equal partners in the venture with RedBird.

Johnson rose to fame as a professional wrestler before becoming one of the most recognizable movie stars and personalities on the planet. The XFL, of course, was created by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, who gave Johnson his start in the sports entertainment business.

There is no immediate word on what the plans are with the XFL, which folded in the spring due to the coronavirus pandemic. The upstart league didn’t get to finish its first season following its long hiatus.
