Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey on Tuesday revealed there is no timetable for rookie Cade Cunningham to return from the NBA’s health and safety protocols.
Cunningham was placed into the health and safety protocols on Dec. 22. He was the first player on the roster to join the protocol but the team has since seen at least eight individuals recently sidelined because of issues related to the coronavirus.
Players and coaches entered into the health and safety protocol that are vaccinated can now be cleared to return after six days, compared to the previous 10-day isolation period. Individuals can still be cleared sooner if they return two negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart.
Casey is uncertain when Cunningham will be cleared to return.
We’re going to leave that to the medical staff as far as exactly when (he) is coming back because it is all fluid. With (him), it is fluid. Even with the protocols, it is going to be something that the medical staff, the league and the doctors are going to have to figure out.
Without Cunningham, the Pistons have dropped their last two contests. They have been forced to sign several replacement players to avoid postponements but could have help on the way with the NBA’s new rules regarding health and safety protocols.
The No. 1 pick is averaging 15.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.4 steals in 25 games this season. He became the eighth-youngest player to record a triple-double and was the youngest to do so in Pistons franchise history.
