Dream scenario plays out for Giants in latest CBS Sports mock draft

In the latest mock draft from CBS Sports, the New York Giants find themselves in an ideal position after a slew of trades alter the top 3.

For those New York Giants fans who are still holding out hope that their team can land Ohio State edge rusher Chase Young with the fourth overall pick in next week’s draft, there is a scenario in which it happens.

Young is widely considered the top talent in the entire draft and has been almost rubber-stamped to be the second pick in the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. The first pick, held by the Cincinnati Bengals, is believed to be reserved for LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, the Heisman Trophy winner.

But after those two teams select, it’s a crapshoot and Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports believes that two teams — the Miami Dolphins (who hold the No. 5 pick) and Los Angeles Chargers (No. 6) — can turn over the fruit stand by trading into the top three to take quarterbacks.

In this scenario, Cincinnati stays put and takes Burrow. Miami trades with Washington for the second pick and selects Oregon QB Justin Herbert. The Chargers do the same for Detroit’s No. 3 pick to take Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa.

That leaves the Giants, at No. 4, with a wide plethora of choices. Young is the primary, but they also have their pick of the litter at all positions other than quarterback, a position in which they currently do not have a need.

Naturally, they would take Young.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, and the Giants get very lucky here. With the run on QBs at the top, Chase Young, whom I believe to be the best prospect in this draft, falls to them at No. 4. They still need an OT, but the chance to draft Young was too much to pass up on.

This scenario is not out of the realm of possibility. There is the likelihood that a trade is swung, but two trades? Doesn’t appear to be realistic.

Detroit is a willing partner and has sent signals out that they are in business. Miami wants to move up, but the Redskins and Chargers have been quiet. Washington would have to be blown away to move out of the 2-spot. In this scenario, Miami offers Washington the fifth and 18th picks in Round 1 for the No. 2 overall pick (plus more that is not outlined here).

With those picks in this mock, the Redskins selected Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs at No. 5 and LSU edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson at No. 18. In examining the return, that might end up being better than just landing Young. Chaisson is a terrific prospect as well and need a tackle with Trent Williams’ status still up in the air.

If the Giants could grab Young, it would transform their defense completely. They haven’t had a player of his ilk since Jason Pierre-Paul was in his heyday. Needless to say, they’ve missed that.
