The preseason recognition continues to roll in for North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye ahead of the 2023 season. After an impressive 2022 campaign in which he was named the ACC’s Player of the Year, Maye heads into 2023 as a Heisman hopeful.
On Tuesday, Maye was one of 35 quarterbacks named to the Davey O’Brien Award Watch list. The list was released by the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee and is given out annually to the most outstanding quarterback in college football.
A list of 35 quarterbacks will be released midseason in October and that will be cut down to semifinalists in November and then finalists two weeks later before the winner is announced in December.

Here is the criteria for the award:
“Compiled by a subset of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee, this year’s list was selected based on career player performance and expectations heading into the 2023 college football season,” the Davey O’Brien Award release read. “All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at an NCAA Division I institution.
