Drake Maye falls in updated quarterback rankings through two weeks

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye fell in the latest rankings by CBS Sports.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye entered this season as the consensus second-best quarterback behind only Caleb Williams of USC. The two are expected to be the top two quarterbacks taken in the 2024 NFL draft.

But it’s been a slow start for Maye under new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey in North Carolina’s offense. And with that, Maye has taken a tumble in Tom Fornelli’s quarterback rankings on CBS Sports. He fell from No. 2 to No. 7 in this week’s rankings.

Here is what Fornelli had to say about Maye and his ranking:

Maye falling five spots isn’t a statement on what I think of him as a player or NFL prospect. I’d still have him at No. 2 behind Caleb Williams. This is more about others stepping up and having better starts to the season while Maye has been pretty ordinary. He’s only thrown two touchdowns (and rushed for a third) in two games with two interceptions. He’s completing over 72% of his passes but averaging only 7.7 yards per attempt. He’s a first-round pick putting up game-manager numbers. I don’t get it. (2)

Maye is still having a good year through two games and he is missing his top target in Tez Walker. It’s just taking some time for him to get used to throwing to other receivers and getting comfortable in the offense.
