For the entirety of this season, the San Antonio Spurs have been garnering a ton of mainstream media attention, and it’s almost all been because of Victor Wembanyama. The 20-year-old Frenchman has been extremely impressive on both ends of the court, churning out highlight-reel plays at every turn.
The Spurs welcomed the Cleveland Cavaliers to town on Saturday night, but unfortunately, the end result was a blowout loss for San Antonio. Cleveland led by as many as 26 points against the Spurs, eventually winning by a final score of 117-101. Wembanyama didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, and neither did the Spurs.
After the game, Donovan Mitchell spoke about the importance of sending a message when playing Wembanyama because he’s going to be one of the faces of the NBA.
“It’s always a competition when you hear about a guy that we all feel can be — probably will be — one of the faces of the league,” Mitchell said via Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News. “You want to send a message for sure.”
Mitchell put up a great game against the Spurs. He finished the night with 31 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and two blocks while shooting 12-of-20 from the field and 4-of-9 from behind the three-point line.
Meanwhile, Wembanyama ended the game with 19 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks while shooting 5-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc.
San Antonio has been playing more competitive basketball as of late, and it’s easy to see their pathway forward to being a title contender.
