Dolphins’ second 2nd-round pick locked into 2020 NFL Draft order

Where will the Miami Dolphins’ second 2nd-round pick fall in the 2020 NFL Draft order?

Admit it, you were a little too busy keying in on whether or not the Houston Texans were going to lose that you forget the 2nd-round of the NFL Draft had some drama for the Miami Dolphins this weekend as well. And, sure enough, the 13-3 New Orleans Saints lost to the Minnesota Vikings in overtime on Sunday — which means we know exactly where the Miami Dolphins’ second 2nd-round pick of the 2020 NFL Draft is going to fall.

Watching the Saints storm through this season — including going undefeated for a month without Drew Brees — left many with the impression that this team was destined for a deep playoff push, a result that would bubble Miami’s 2nd-round pick via New Orleans into oblivion.

Nope!

Miami’s second 2nd-round pick will fall 56th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. It’s not the marquee positioning of a 1st-round selection, but remember, Miami traded out of the 48th spot in the 2019 NFL Draft to move back with New Orleans — effectively equating the cost of the Josh Rosen trade to 8 spots in the NFL Draft order and 12 months of wait time.

Had the Saints advanced, it would’ve been likely this pick would have sat 60th. Advance to the championship round would have had this pick 61st or later. Instead, Miami got about as good of a result as they could have hoped for after trading with a team that went 13-3 in 2019 and had a home playoff game.

That certainly helps take the sting out of seeing the Texans advance and pushing Miami’s third 1st-round pick down the order in the process.
